Workshop: Taiwan's Puppet Culture

May 31st , 10:00~11:30
Puppet shows integrate music with theatre, carvings, embroidery, and religion. They thus reflect authentic local customs more than any other performance. Once, there was a street at Dadaocheng, called Lion Alley, known for puppet shows in northern Taiwan. Two legendary puppet masters, Tian-lu Li and Wang Hsu, both based their puppet theatres on the street. The famous Lion Alley has already disappeared, but, fortunately, Robin Ruizendaal and his team have collected puppet show artifacts from many places in Taiwan.

The collection can be seen in the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Thatre Museum, the largest puppet show museum in Asia. Its own puppet show troupe, Taiyuan Puppet Theatre, is performing puppet shows all over the world, which is a great way of connecting Taiwan to other places in the world. Director Robin Ruizendaal will introduce Taiwan's puppet show culture and talk about his personal experiences in this place.
